The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 12-24mm f/4G IF-ED is an ultra-wide-angle zoom lens built exclusively for Nikon DX-format (APS-C) DSLR cameras, offering an effective focal range of roughly 18-36mm in full-frame terms — ideal for landscapes, architecture, and interior photography where a broad field of view is essential.
The optical design uses 11 elements in 7 groups, including two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and three aspherical elements, working together to minimize distortion, chromatic aberration, and coma even at the widest focal length. A constant f/4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range provides consistent exposure and framing flexibility, paired with a 7-blade rounded diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus rendering.
Autofocus is driven by Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, quiet, and precise focusing, with full-time manual focus override for fine adjustments. Nikon's Internal Focus (IF) design keeps the front element stationary during focusing, making it easier to use filters like polarizers.
At 465g, the lens strikes a solid balance between rugged build quality and manageable weight for a professional-grade wide zoom, making it a longstanding favorite among DX-format shooters specializing in expansive, dramatic wide-angle compositions.
