Japanese National Railways began research into AC electrification in the 1950s, and gradually introduced it to local main lines.
In terms of rolling stock technology, control methods had not yet been established, so new technologies were developed and installed in new models.
One of these definitive locomotives was the ED75 series, which appeared in 1963. Deployed primarily in the Tohoku region, it served on the Tohoku Main Line, Joban Line, and Ou Main Line, with Hokkaido and Kyushu versions also appearing.
This book introduces the development history and background to the introduction of the ED75 series, as well as features interviews with existing rolling stock and traces the development of AC electric rolling stock from the perspective of control methods.
