The Izumo was the lead ship of the Izumo-class, the final of six armored cruisers built under the 6-6 Fleet Plan. It was completed on September 25, 1900, at Armstrong's Elsick Works in the UK. During the Russo-Japanese War, it served as the flagship of the 2nd Fleet, which was formed with five other armored cruisers. In the Battle of Ulsan on August 14, 1904, it captured and destroyed three cruisers from the Vladivostok Fleet, which were wreaking havoc on commerce raiding near Japan. In the Battle of Tsushima on May 27, 1905, the following year, it took the brunt of the artillery fire in place of the battleships of the 1st Squadron, which had temporarily lost course and drifted away from the Baltic Fleet. It continued to capture the fleet and contribute to the Japanese Navy's overwhelming victory.
