[Content] In 1989, the new Legacy became a huge hit, and Subaru (then Fuji Heavy Industries) succeeded in revitalizing its struggling business. Subsequently, the Impreza, released in 1992 as the successor to the Leone, a long-standing flagship model, was also well-received. Riding this wave of momentum, Subaru launched its third major product, the Forester, in 1997. The Forester adopted a packaging that combined the Legacy's 4WD system and horizontally opposed engine with a tall station wagon body that offered excellent passenger comfort. It could be called a pioneer of what we now call crossovers and SUVs, and it gained new Subaru fans all over the world. The Forester was equipped with an engine tuned up to 265 horsepower, a 6-speed manual transmission, a dedicated sports suspension, increased body rigidity, aero parts, and high-performance brakes.
