This [Kamawanu] hand towel features a traditional spring pattern imbued with auspicious meaning. “Kamawanu” is a rebus—a puzzle where hidden meanings are found within characters and images—formed by combining the characters for “sickle” (kama) + circle (◯) + “cloth” (nu). [Kamawanu] expresses the spirit of Edo-era townspeople who selflessly helped the weak, without concern for their own well-being. Please enjoy these classic patterns, each with a unique story to tell.

・The Meaning Behind the Pattern: This Edo-period-inspired patchwork design reimagines famous scenic spots depicted in the ukiyo-e print “Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido”—rain, snow, waves, and boat rudders—as classical patterns. The landscapes of the Tokaido, once traveled by many, are imbued with wishes for “safe travels” and “fulfillment of desires” to protect the peace of the destination. Furthermore, the “patchwork” technique of connecting different beautiful patterns symbolizes “manifold blessings” – gathering and multiplying good fortune from across the country – and “successful relationships” – forging deep bonds with wonderful people and new opportunities. This design is filled with the hope that those who use this towel will enjoy the beautiful scenery of Japan and experience a safe and fulfilling journey through life, filled with happy encounters.
・[Kamawanu] hand towels are made with total-length (bun) fabric. Compared to the specially thick fabric used for picture hand towels, this fabric has a coarser weave and is thicker. As a result, it is highly absorbent and breathable, making it a practical hand towel. The appeal of total-length fabric lies in the way its character develops with use.
・There are two main types of fabric used for hand towels: “bun” and “oka.” “Bun” fabric is woven with thicker, 20-count yarn, while “oka” fabric is woven with finer, 30-count yarn. Because “oka” fabric is made with fine yarn, it has a finer weave, allowing for detailed designs such as delicate patterns and gradations. “Bun” fabric, being made with thicker yarn, has a coarser weave than “oka” fabric. However, this results in excellent breathability and absorbency, making it ideal for use as a handkerchief or dishcloth. While it cannot match the expressiveness of “oka” fabric when it comes to intricate designs, it offers the appeal of experiencing the texture of the fabric itself.
