What does it take to create ‘even better whetstones’?

〇 It is said that ‘whetstones are compatible with certain materials,’ but let us not be ashamed of the present. Let us think and consider every day, and without hesitation, ask everyone, ‘Let’s make even better whetstones.’

〇 Even if they are thin, narrow, or compact, let us ensure that they properly perform their function as tools. They possess the power to cultivate a spirit of repair and longevity that will lead to even better sharpening lives for everyone.

〇 Let us care for them cleanly and brightly, expressing gratitude to the pioneers of [Togiyama]. Because of the long history and accumulated tradition, we can enjoy the convenience and abundance of today. Let us cherish and protect both what is visible and what is not, and never forget it.

〇 Let us properly pass on the intangible, inner assets of the whetstone craftsmen of [Togiyama], and continue ‘Let’s make even better whetstones’ so that everyone’s happy sharpening lives will continue.

This is a collaborative sales product of a Kyoto Prefecture-approved business cooperative association established by multiple whetstone businesses and landowners in [Togiyama], Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, near Narataki and Umegahata.

To produce locally within the business area, our association centralizes joint forestry management, mining, ore selection, and manufacturing, ensuring that you will not miss the opportunity to use them as everyday consumer goods. We also strive to provide more reliable details of the origin, as well as product information, history, and stories, and to contribute to quality control.

Mining geological information passed down from the Honma family of the [Kogei-ji] Temple since the late Heian period, and from the Yamamoto family since the early Edo period, is promoted through joint ownership and mutual supplementation to eliminate the anxiety of relying on oral traditions and the apprenticeship system, and to create an environment for nurturing the next generation and connecting to a long-lasting traditional industry.

Geological information is certainly essential for mining, but we burn with the desire to create ‘even better whetstones’ every day, and by thinking together, listening to everyone, and steadily accumulating effort, we hope that superior successors will emerge and ‘even better whetstones’ will continue to be born.
