Paper Mario and his unique friends embark on a grand adventure.
[Story] Mario arrives in "Rogue Town" after receiving a letter from Princess Peach asking for his help in a treasure hunt. However, Princess Peach is nowhere to be found. Seeking clues about Princess Peach, Mario visits Professor Frankly, a treasure researcher in town, and learns that the "1000-Year Door" leads to the treasure, and that seven "Star Stones" are needed to open it. Believing that he can meet Princess Peach if he pursues the treasure, Mario, along with Christine, whom he met in town, sets off on an adventure in the paper world to find the Star Stones. It also seems that Bowser is looking for Princess Peach as well...
[The setting for the adventure is a paper world full of encounters and surprises] Wherever you go, you'll encounter various events such as giant dragons waiting, residents suddenly turning into pigs, and incidents occurring on trains. Sometimes you'll come across places that seem impossible to pass through, but Mario uses his paper-thin body to squeeze into narrow gaps, transforms into a paper airplane and flies through the air, and uses other paper-only actions to forge his own path.
[A diverse cast of companions who join Mario on his adventure] Mario will meet some slightly unusual characters wherever he goes. Christine provides information about the people, places, and enemies around him; Nokotaro is skilled at burrowing into shells and charging at enemies; and Cloud can create strong winds to blow away nearby objects. These companions become allies and help Mario on his adventure with their various abilities and personalities.
[Chaotic Theater Battle] When you bump into an enemy on the field, a turn-based command battle begins in a theater! Mario chooses actions from a variety of options, such as "Attack," "Item," "Special Move," "Defend," and "Appeal to the Audience," according to his strategy. Pressing buttons at the right time with attacks increases the damage dealt to enemies, and the audience joins in to liven up the battle.
