[Laughter brings good fortune, marital harmony, and fertility] Hotei is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, beloved as gods of prosperity and fortune. He is said to be the only real person among the Seven Lucky Gods. He was a Zen monk from the late Tang Dynasty in China and is considered an incarnation of Maitreya Bodhisattva. He is said to have been innocent and popular with children. He is depicted holding a large bag for alms and a round fan to bring good fortune. While not widely known, the Seven Lucky Gods are actually made up of gods and Buddhas from India, China, and Japan.
