Maitreya Bodhisattva: The Thinking Buddha. Also known as the "Future Buddha," Maitreya Bodhisattva is said to become a Tathagata (Great Buddha) 5.67 billion years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, and save all living beings. Until then, he will be training in Tushita Heaven. He is well known for his half-lotus pose, with his right foot resting on his left thigh and his right hand resting on his chin, as if pondering how to help us. Isumu's meticulous sculpting is based on the Important Cultural Property "Gilt-bronze Half-lotus Maitreya Bodhisattva," inscribed in 666. While the production of Buddhist statues in Japan began in earnest during the early Asuka period, the later period saw a rise in the popularity of ornate decorations and softer physiques. This statue is considered a benchmark for this new era, and despite its small size, it is a masterpiece with many notable features, including a large headdress and a skirt pattern that appears to be influenced by Sui-style art. At Isumu, we have recreated all of this charm in a statue that is just 11 centimetres tall, creating a tangible presence of a gilt bronze Buddha that is over 1,350 years old.
