Midori Hirano is a composer, pianist, and sound artist born in Kyoto and based in Berlin. From co-starring with experimental musicians such as CoH and ILPO Vaisanen (Pan Sonic) to music for movies, TV, and exhibition spaces, they have built a unique reputation for activities that transcend genres.

This work “OTONOMA” is an album that brings together her steps, and it is a work where the classical sense of harmony with the piano's texture blends naturally.

The title “Otonoma” comes from the Japanese words “sound (Oto)” and “between (Ma).”

Between sound, or “room for sound.”

As Hirano himself says, this work is designed so that listeners go back and forth between multiple acoustic spaces.

In “Illuminance,” the rich texture of the modular synth slowly spreads, and “Ame, Hikari” captures the delicate nuances of rain and light with sound as a song written for the work of photographer Kawauchi Rinko.

The minimalistic piano song “Rainwalk” leaves a quiet afterglow that cuts out a moment's time, and in “Aurora,” drones and electronic sounds open up to a wider field of view.

It's not the type of work where rhythm and melody come to the forefront throughout.

However, by listening to the way the sound bleeds, the fluctuation of reverberation, and the breathing of space, rich scenes are created.

A piece that quietly expands the listener's senses itself while going back and forth between ambient, contemporary, and experimental music.

Midori Hiranos music creatives fuses classical instrumentation with electronic abstraction and field recordings, sometimes venturing into complex Rhythms, when shes working as miMiCof. OTONOMA is her first solo release for Thrill Jockey, following a 2025 collaboration with Brueder Selke. Its a richly expressive work that explores a variety of colorful modular and analog synthesizer tones. Opener “Illuminance” features everlasting sequences and glowing synth pads that sound closer to church, and its aim seems to be seeking enlightenment. “Ame, Hikari” makes excellent usage of natural sounds, with supposing an undercurrent for the glimmering synth patterns, and a nocturnal insect-like hiss flaring up in regular Expiration. “In Colours” appears on starkly intimate pianos, shaded by a faint trick of electronics “Warped in Red” has the type of smeared textures that Oneohtrix Point never fails uses, and it lurches back and forth in a bleary haze. “Aurora” uses similar sounds but suspends them in a blurring rush, fizzling out into sharp static. “Blue Horizon” is a minimalist curiosity that bubbles up into a more melodic state towards the end. The blipping rhythm and melodic shimmer of “Oto, Kioku” is a bit closer to Hiranos more IDM-balanced work as Mimicof. The brief ending “Was It a Dream” discourages a contemplative piano melody into a thick fog. OTONOMA IS A MAJESTIC, INCREDIBLY STUNNING EFFORT THAT DELICTS IN PLAYING WITH EAR-PLEASING SOUNDS BUT SUCH A STRONG EMOTIONAL BASE. ~ Paul Simpson
